Stretching from the glistening turquoise waters of the West Coast towards the hinterland, the area is named for its rich fertile soil which turns black after the rains in winter, ‘Die Swartland’ means the ‘black land’ in Afrikaans. Visitors can sample delicious wines along the wonderful Swartland Wine Route, visit the quaint historic towns dotting the region and enjoy a wide selection of adventure activities to choose from including: cycling, mountain biking, trail running and scenic hiking trails.

DAYS 7-8 : ROUTE 62 Meandering from the cosmopolitan city of Cape Town to the Karoo town of Oudtshoorn, through a series of fascinating small towns and breathtaking scenery, Route 62 is the longest Wine Route in the world. Lush greenery and fertile valleys form a stark contrast against the semi-desert of the Klein Karoo while towering mountains and their rivers and streams provide an awe-inspiring backdrop throughout. Some of the renowned attractions visitors will spot as they follow the route are the Winelands of the Breede River Valley, the majestic Swartberg Mountains, the Cango Caves and ostrich farms of Oudtshoorn, and the fruit orchards of the Langkloof Valley.

The Tsitsikamma National Park falls within the Garden Route National Park and encompasses a marine conservation belt which stretches five kilometres out into the ocean. It is home to diverse fauna and flora including over 9000 species of indigenous fynbos. This magnificent reserve stretches over 34000 hectares of beautiful landscape covered in indigenous fynbos and inhabited by a variety of mammals including bontebok, eland, Cape mountain zebra, and baboon. The reserve also encompasses a marine section which extends for 5 kilometres into the ocean. Visitors can look forward to a wonderful selection of activities including: walking the popular 5-day Whale Trail, known as one of the best hikes in South Africa; jumping on an eco-quad bike tour and soaking up the reserve’s scenic vistas.

DAYS 20-23 : STELLENBOSCH A blend of historical architecture, student life, epicurean delights and oak-lined avenues, Stellenbosch is a picturesque university town surrounded by mountains and vineyards. A walking tour of the town centre allows visitors to take in its beautifully preserved Cape Dutch and Victorian architecture, as well as the many enticing art galleries, craft shops, clothing boutiques and gift stores, while foodies may prefer indulging in mouth-watering cuisine and fine wines at one of the chic restaurants or buzzing bistros. Stellenbosch is also the ideal base from which to explore the renowned local wine route, boasting a high proportion of the country’s leading wine estates.
